I have seen on FrenchTV this sunday a very interresting show, which is called "7 à 8". During this show, which is dedicated to news, they were talking about a French entrepreneur called Matthieu Beley. He is a former student of HEC, which is one of the most famous French business school, and had worked for many years in the Sillicon Valley for a software company. Everything was doing fine for him there. However he decided to work for humanitary associations. He then worked in Afghanistan for the United Nations. He wrote a report about the war between heroine and flowers, which are cultivated in Afghanistan.
Indeed, Afghanistan produces around 90% of the world heroine. It has always been the main product of this country since the Talibans took the power in the early 90's. Hence it is a real challenge and issue in this country : On a hand, the country is really poor and need the easy money of heroine to survive, but on the other hand, this muslim nation is against the use of drugs.
Matthieu Beley then decided to create his own business there. He now manages a orange plant, and brew orange flowers to get fragrances and oil for spa products.
I found this idea really smart, and very interresting. It shows how an entrepreneur can change things in a very poor country, on the edge of the civil war. Congratulation M. Belley, but also TF1 to have shown this show.
