The clean car developped in France

This is a news I found on Mickael Guillois' blog. Here is the translation of the podcast presented on Mickael's blog

In France a clean car using compressed air has been developed and should be launched soon. The car has been conceived by French engineer Guy Negre, and the car produces 0 pollution in town, as it used compressed air as energy! The car has an autonomy of 80 kilometers (about 50 miles), and you can fill up the battery as fast as 3 minutes by using a compressor that would cost about $2 of electricity.

The car can go up to 150 km/h (93.5 m/h), which is, as you might have noticed, way faster than the speed limit.
The car is cheap as it would cost 3600 euros. Moreover, by purchasing this car, the user would be eligible by French tax law for a 5000 euros tax credit, which would turn the car even more profitable.

The car should be produced in less than a year. Here you will find below some pictures of the car and also some technical facts about the car.

Ingrid Bettencourt blog supporting day

I have already announced this action day in my blog here.
Today, it has been 6 years that Ingrid Bettencourt, former senator in Columbia, has been kidnapped, and is the hostage of the FARCs, a terrorist group.

Why did I decide to participate to this effort?
Because I think that it is important not to forget about our rights, and about our luck of being free. Ingrid is a symbol of terrorism trying to attack democracy. She is that has always fought for her country, and her will of liberty let us remind that 3 000 people are hostages of similar organization in Columbia.

Ingrid has known terrible detention conditions, and has always been optimistic about her liberation. I respect deeply her courage.

So as a blogger, I wanted to communicate for her, wishing that she will be freed soon.

The Velib at San Francisco?

That was one of the topic of discussion of yesterday's French Thursdays I went to in San Francisco, CA. We were discussing about the traffic problems of San Francisco, and how biking would be a great alternative and solution for this town. And then the idea came up: Why not developping a velib in San Francisco?

Don't know what the Velib is?
The Velib is a new system in Paris of Free bikes renting. You can actually find an article I posted last year about it on this blog here.

This video will help you out understanding the concept. You have bikes parking all over the town, where you can take a bike to go to your destination. You simply need to give it back to the next parking spot available.

Is it a realistic project?

In my opinion it is. The only problem will be that I believe in the US this kind of initiative has to come from corporation instead of the town. Therefore, I think that if a company is willing to develop the project and can turn it into a profitable business, then we could see soon a Velib-like system in San Francisco.

What do you think about the idea?

Candidate McCain has problem with Geography

This is a video that is making a buzz on the web right now. Candidate to US elections McCain says he met president of Germany Poutine. Well, for whom does not know, Poutine is the president of Russia, not Germany. This is in my opinion a really big mistake for someone that is willing to represent on the international scene the United States. Germany is one of the top 4 economical power in the world, and number 1 in Europe.

Sales Techniques: Sales tips to sell your house during the real estate crisis

This is a good sales strategy people should apply if they want or need to sell a house in this real estate market. Indeed, house prices have fallen the past few months dramatically during this mortgage crisis. So what is the best technique to sell your home right now?

Some people would try to place an ad, and announce a price that would be higher than their expectations. For example you would show a $1 000 000 price for a house you are willing to sell for 900 000, thinking that anyway the buyer would adjust their prices afterward during the negotiation process.

But this is not exactly the best practice. By doing that, you will probably cool down a lot of potential buyers that would be willing to buy for $900 000. The best way is to place an ad with a lower price than what you would like to sell for. For example, for this same house, you could announce a $850 000 price, in order to stimulate the number of visitors and potential buyers to make an offer.

This is at this specific time, where you will have a large demand that you will be able to upper your offer. Let's think about it: Why are the prices going down? Simply because there is no demand, no potential buyers. But if you have more buyers than the supply, you can raise your prices.

So that is the tip of the day: if you want to sell your home, you should advertise it with a lower price than the one that you would like to sell it for, in order to create demand, and then rise the price while you have couple of interested people to buy.

I have a Ginger Account

I finally own a Ginger account! I received on Monday an email from Netvibes giving me my password to upgrade my netvibes account to Ginger. I wanted badly this account as I am setting up my new website. I wanted to share with the visitors of the site my ecosystem, composed by the RSS feeds I follow and the information that matters to me.

I must say that the interface is very good. Even though it is fast, I could notice that there were still bugs (this is a beta version, not publicly released yet). It bugged my web browser. But in overall, I find the service very cool. It allows to anyone to show its community its information feeds and what he is doing. It is very interesting, and I think the service will have a great success.

If you want to visit my Ecosystem, you will find it at www.netvibes.com/schriver

When being messy is an advantage for recruiters

I wanted to share with you an article I found on the French blog of Cadreemploi.fr, a Monster.com-like in France, specialized in managers employment.

This article refer to a book available in French recently released, "Un peu de désordre = beaucoup de profit(s)", in english, "A perfect Mess" from Eric Abrahamson and David H. Freedman. Abrahamson is a professor at the prestigious business school of Columbia University.
The idea is that being messy is actually a great asset. This book shows in 340 pages that being messy at work or at home actually could allow you to save time, stimulate idea, and therefore in the end generate money!

The blog explains that in order to distinguish yourself from the crowd, for your next cover letter could start like this: "Since the beginning of my career, I have always paid specific attention to always disorganize the department where I was working".

However, the article finishes saying there was a lack of objectivity in this theory that jeopardizes the theory. I must admit that organization is not a natural skill for me, and I had to find for a while to become an organized person. I had to force myself using agendas, and actually, my pocket pc helped me a lot.

What do you think about this theory?

Innovative sales offer: Todai restaurants

This one of the sales offer I found interesting lately I discovered in the US. And that is ingenious too. Todai is an Asian buffet restaurant here in the US. And they have developed a great offer for birthdays to attract new customers.

Who likes to spend his birthday alone? Most of the time people like to have a restaurant with family members and friends for their birthday. Therefore Todai proposes to offer the lunch or dinner to the person who has his birthday the same day. This offer is very good for the person who has his birthday the same day, but it also gives a chance to Todai to get some new customers that will come the same day, and therefore, to expand their clientele.

What do you think about this idea? Do you think it could be apply to other industries?

The more complex the product it is, the more information is necessary

This is a very important point in term of marketing. In each customer decision there is a risk. This risk is of course to have a product that would not meet his expectation, or that he doesn't need, or even that is not the best for the same price.

Depending on different factors, the risk will be higher or lower. For instance, buying a home of $200 000 will offer a higher risk rate than buying a $40 book about Asian philosophy that you know you have some chances to never read.

And therefore, the role of the marketer is to lower the risk, in order to facilitate the decision making process of the customer. How to do so? Well, one of the main one is to inform the client, with easy to consult and to get information.

The goal is to have an equation where the risk level will be equal to the information level needed to make a decision.

Therefore we have at our company, (as we are selling mortgages) a large range of communication tools we give access to our clients. The important is to have a multi canal communication allowing the customer to have all the information they need, whether it is borchures, websites, blogs or provided during seminars. We want our customers to feel secure and well informed in order to have take the best decision as possible.

The Customer Attitude and Real Estate

This is an interesting topic. The customer attitude is one of the fundamental component of the success of a customer relationship strategy. Most of the time, CRM applications are developed in order to help the sales force and/or marketing departments to ease their work, but they are not customer oriented.

The whole concept of customer relationship management is not only about bettering the company's processes, it is also to develop a customer attitude inside the company.

The customer attitude aims to place customer relationship as first priority of the company. That means all the departments of the company are implicated. Whether it is the supply chain which needs to communicate on where the products are located and when they are expected to be deliver, or the accounting, which needs to solve unpaid issues, the whole company has to make sure they are providing the best service to the client in order to keep him.

The customer attitude is about thinking about customers' benefits instead of company's ones.

And that is actually one of the main problems I can see in the real estate industry.

How many times you can see in real estate advertisements the terms "best originators", or I sold this house in just 2 weeks!".

All these ads are only there to flatter the ego of the real estate professional. They think that by showing off their skills and results they will attract a client seeking for expertise. But actually having a customer attitude is turning the problem up side down.

The customer doesn't really care about the salesman ego, he is too busy thinking about his own issues. That is sort of the same concept of the Ego Marketing I presented earlier this week.

The customer has an over sized ego and only think (and want to hear) about himself. The ads should therefore be oriented to solving clients problems. Instead of saying "I originated 15 loans last month", they should more say, I see that with your profile, I would be able to have a great loan offer within the next few days.

Therefore, there is a lot of work to do about the customer attitude and philosophy in this industry.

CRM 2.0

Of course this title can seem demagogic and hyped. But this is what this very interesting article is talking about CRM 2.0: When web 2.0 meets CRM.
This article talks how the new technologies and their use (Wikis, blogs, web communities and social networks) have changed the relationship between the companies and their customers. Therefore, a new way of thinking customer relationship management appeared.
The customer relationship management has been installed first by engineers and mathematicians, setting up some programs to optimize the customers data base they had to allow the company to become more efficient.
But now we see a metamorphose of the CRM. The new CRM incorporates Web 2.0 tools to optimize the relationship with customers.
Indeed, a relationship has to be built on both ends, by the customer and the companies. A one way relationship is most of the time not healthy and do not last long. Now the companies has to include the customers in its processes, and build, as it is explained in the article, a community.
"The next generation of e-commerce has to be a unique customer experience that will enable companies and their customers to function as a community, creating new solutions and using existing ones in close collaboration. The free flow of information will allow the community to identify the respective needs immediately and seamlessly deliver the right solutions."
That also means, more humans (humanity?) in the system. More interaction between the brand and the customers. And that implies a high collaboration between the marketing and the sales force.
"Recognizing the importance of making the sales and marketing process an interactive conversation, smart companies worldwide are leveraging User groups, social networks, message boards, blogs and video sharing. They are engaging the customer via personal pages, RSS, social filters and making it on-demand through mobile web, mobile applications, SMS, podcasting, streaming video and so forth."
This is one of the next challenge of the CRM: bring some human skills, and to establish strong relations between marketing and sales support to optimize the information flow between the customers and the brand.

Google will show Android during the Mobile World Congress show

The Mobile World Congress show is an annual event gathering the whole world of the mobile market.
This year, one of the main hot spot will be Google's booth, where for the first time the Google phones will be unveiled. Texas Instrument will be one of the first producer to expose their prototype.

When will we be able to see these phones? So far they are only prototypes. We should not expect a launch before couple of months (I would say at least September, probably for the end of the year). Also, we don't have yet much information on what the phone will be able to do and the competition doesn't. But through this show, we will probably able to understand the new trends and new functionalities phones will have to own in the future to compete in this market.

Source: http://www.cbnews.fr/articles/medias/l-elysee-cherche-a-rassurer-les-syndicats-de-l-audiovisuel-public

Ebay Threatened by a users' boycott

Ebay has driven users anger after having announced some policy changes. Ebay has decided to lower the fees for listing items but on the other hand to higher its commissions on sold items. Meanwhile, Ebay could hold some Paypal payments for up to 21 days(!) on certain transactions.

What you have to know if you are not familiar with Ebay, the auction website is a real ecosystem. A lot of people are earning money and make a living out of Ebay. They are using the auction website as a retail, where they can display and sell their products. Therefore, while Ebay is correcting its terms of services, you can imagine that if affects them deeply. Some of the users are thinking about boycotting the site to protest.

Now Ebay is in a very uncomfortable situation. Can they come back on their decision? It is going to be hard, as they have already announced it. So now, this is a new situation where the company will have to negotiate and talk to its clients in order to find compromises.

This example shows how important customers, whether they are sellers or buyers (or both), are. Without users, there is no market, and then no company. The company should have thought about it and incorporate users to its thinking process in order to lower the potential protest risk. They could have for example edit a forum where people could have suggest what they would like to have for policies, maybe vote for them. Also Ebay would have introduced and explain these new terms. At the 2.0 era, Ebay have to understand customers have a strong bargaining force, and they should be taken into consideration while changing a product or a service.

Search Engine Bombing

This is a technique I have just heard about. Search Engine Bombing aims to use the algorithm used by a search engine to optimize its search engine results, by using another website with a good ranking.

If you want to know more about the technique, I invite you to check this blog article (in French) or the Wikipedia page.

The consumer attitude or the base of a strong customer relationship management

I have just finished the reading of le marketing de l'ego, Henri Kaufman's book. Henri Kaufman is a famous French blogger, but also has become over the years one of the main French specialist of the customer relationship management. I also had the chance to have him as a professor last year during my master program.

This book is very interesting and that is why I thought it would be a great idea to share it with the English speaking audience.
This book explains first how the client has turned into a narcissist person. As companies were talking more and more about the king client, the customer started to believe in it, and became the "me-client": a self centric being, that wants the company to please each of its desire. The client is thinking and want to hear only about himself.

The client became more and more important for the client as competition has become higher and higher. Also, the Internet contributed for this client

This book is then exploring the different moments of the relationship, which is a mix between long term engagement and small attentions. Kaufman describes the customer relationship with the brand as a love one.
Henri talks about all the new trends of marketing, from the emergence of the woman segment, the multichannel communication and  distribution.

This book is also showing up how sales and marketing are getting closer and closer. Marketers have to start conversations, to listen to clients and to provide to sales forces the right tools to sell. Also, since the main goal is to develop long term relationship, we can also see the draft of a new style of incentive, trying to promote long term relationship instead of the one shot transaction.

As a conclusion, Henri Kaufman speaks about the customer attitude, which is the central piece of the customer relationship management. Each actor of the companies had to be focused on providing the best customer experience, whether it is the supply chain manager that has to deliver on time, the sales person or any person in contact with the people.

When TV becomes interactive

I invite you to see the article of Techcrunch on Apple patent to bring widgets and chat to TVs.
Indeed, one of the main problem of TV and also the main critique of web 2.0 geeks is that TV is not interactive. Loic Lemeur likes to say that TV is like an aquarium that you are watching, you can't interact with it. Web 2.0 and new web technologies allow the user to get inside the aquarium.

Apple is then thinking about integrating chatting and widget to its Apple TV. Let's remember Apple TV is one of the few Apple's product that did not meet success. But more than that, this idea shows well how TV could become more interactive over the years.

The article I was talking about talks about how  Apple would like to integrate chatting and widgets to TV. If so, the way TV is consume will be different. We can imagine you could interact during a game or a live show on your facebook, or also have other analysts commenting the show on the go.

TV has to find new ways to develop itself, while Internet is killing its business modell. By mixing as Apple thinks TV and web 2.0 technologies will help TV to become more interactive and to mutate into a new TV experience.

When the customer relationship add value to the company

I wanted to share with you a commercial technique I learned couple of days ago while I was listening to a christian speech. I have always been impressed by the oratory skills of priests and pastors in the US, sometimes bringing 20 000 people for their shows.

Anyway, I was listening to this CD in my car (even though I am not really fond of this type of material), and one of the stories.
The priest was talking about a time where he saw a poor asking for money in the street. The church person says he does not like to give money like this because he does not know what the money will be used for (to buy drugs for example, or food?). So instead of giving him money, he decided to go towards the poor person, shake his hand and says him hi.

After that, he asked: "Are you hungry?". And the other responds: "yes"
- There is a Mc Donald's accross the street would you like me to offer you a McDonald's?
- Yes, yes of course.
- What do you like at Mc Donald's?
- The quater pound.
- Really, do you mind if I offer you a quater pound?"

And then he offered the burger and discussed with the poor. Along the discussion, he learned that the poor was an artist, and was painting. When the lunch was done, the poor offered to thank the man a paint he made.

Why do I tell you this story? Because I think it tells us a lot about how to create some consistent commercial offer. In this example, instead of simply giving money to this person (wether it is more than a quater pound, that is not the point), he established a relationship with the person by starting a discussion. And out of this discussion.

Because of this original approach, the priest earned even more than what he expected, which is this tableau.

What this story teach us?
  • Establishing a true and honest relationship is the foundation of a great CRM. If the relationship would not have been effective, the person would have not known what to offer.
  • Instead of only offering an amount of money, like a gift card or a discount, try to offer something to your client more valuable. In this example, what has more value for the client, $6 (the price of the burger) or the fact the person asked him for what he wanted and offered it.
  • The relationship has a value for the client. Without this discussion, the gift of the hamburger would not have been as appreciated, and the poor will probably never offered back the paint.
What do you think about this story?
How could we translate that better into a customer relationship strategy?

Domain Name Trading Business

Friday, February 1, 2008, The New York Times dedicated an article about domain name. That is very intersting how domain name trading has become the new Eldorado of investors and speculators.

Domain name are considered as gold on the Internet. General domain name, such as sales.com or computersystems.com, have a great value as a lot of people are taking a guess on these domain name instead of using a search engine. For example, if someone wants to have some information about printers, he might try to type www.printers.com into the search engine. This domain name has a value for two reasons:
- First, the domain name traders will post some ads to external links on www.printers.com, and then generate a revenue.
- It can also be sold to a printer company, willing to use this domain name to sell its own products.

There is a real business out of these names. In 2007, 106 names drew more than $100,000 each, while porn.com has been sold for $9.5 million! Companies are indeed using domain name registration or trading as cash machine. They are using the domain name first to place some ads, hoping the visitors will type their domain names, and eventually sell it to a company willing to use the domain name for its business.

Some of them also buy in bulk domain names, and then place ads on it. After a few days, they sell the less productive ones to keep the profitable ones.
What is sure, domain name traders have bad reputations in the Internet business, but the trade is doing great, and seems to establish a true  industry.

Google struggles with Online networks

In 2007 Google made $4.2 billion of benefits. However, despite this great result, the Mountain View firm deceived analysts.

Indeed, as web 2.0 and online communities are thrilling investors and specialists, Google seems to struggle with Myspace, while Miicrosoft has partnered with Facebook with success.
Google established a partnership with Myspace to provide Adsense on the platform. That is the reason why Google's stock price has fallen at $564, whereas it reached $747 in November.

Google seems to have reached its growth limit, and has problem to find new strategies to grow its (already large) revenues.
However, the competitor Microsoft has encountered success with Facebook. Microsoft responsible of the partnership with Facebook John Tinter explains: "Google has tries to apply its Adsense system to myspace without adaptation, whereas Microsoft has tested different techniques of ads, including the ones which appear in contextual blocs, or banners for example".

Does Google has to change its business plan? Maybe Google had made errors while partnering with Myspace, as they did not think about the specificities of social communities. But it doesn't mean Google is weaker than couple of months ago.

I personally believe that the Yahoo problems and Google's issues to keep its fast pace growth turns stock prices down because of the high speculation that occured so far on these stocks. As I have said for Yahoo, which is even more true with Google, these companies are still profitable, but the fact is that their stock price were based on their skill to grow faster than any other industries, which is maybe not true anymore.

I think these falls of stock prices will only contribute to a better evaluation of the stock value, and then get rid of the speculation buzz of these companies.

Superbowl XLII will be a great sport event, not a great commercial millesime though

Yesterday was the main sport event in the US, maybe along the March Madness of College basketball, the Superbowl. Superbowl is one of the main dates on an american calendar. Superbowl is known for three main components.

Of course the game, which is the finale of a great football season.
The half time show, which is a great concert with world class artists as Paul McCartney or The Rolling Stone
And the ads, because as one of the greatest audience of the year, brands take advantage of the occasion to propose new commercials and affirm their brand equity.

On the field
That has been a great Superbowl. That is true that the score was really low, but it is because of the great defensive efforts of both teams. We saw also meanwhile a lot of nice offensive movements. It has also had a great 4th quarter, that has been concluded by one of the biggest upset of NFL Superbowl history. The Patriots were supposed to dominate this game, and they finally lost in the last minute of the game.

On the stage

On the stage it was also a nice show, with Tom Petty, who I must admit I did not know. That was a really good show, with firework, crowd chants, and rock'n roll.

The commercials
I must admit, I have been deceived by this year's commercials. Usually, you can see a real creativity. The commercials were big productions, with a lot of special effects, but none of them were reall catchy or really funny. I however picked three of them that I liked.

The one that I really found funny was when basket ball player Shaquille O'Neal (2m13/7"1, 150 kg/325 pounds) wins a horse race (poor horse...).

Also, my favorite player Charles Barkley has finally put Dwayne Wade in his fave five. I don't know if it was as sweet as he expected...

Also this one below for Pepsi.

For those who have not seen the commercials, you can still watch them at www.myspace.com/superbowlads.

Special offer for coffee packs at the Starbucks coffee of Independance Street, in Mountain View, CA

A little ad to help the Starbucks coffee at the intersection of independence and Charleston in Mountain View, California. You can have a free drip of coffee for any pound of coffee you will buy! As it is a competition between the different Starbucks coffee, I would appreciate if you could go to this specific one to help them win the prize!

It will also allow the store to have the visit of CEO Howard Shutz, in case they win the competition. So please, if you are in the area, go to this store, and buy a pound of the top of the line coffee they sell in this store.

The Sun Is Starting To Grow Jobs

Indeed, the Green Industry is rocketing now while the interest in alternative energy is climbing across the US, especially solar power which is rising in California.

The industry has created several thousand jobs in the production of solar energy cells and installation of solar panels on roofs in the recent roofs. SunPower, a company that makes silicon-based cells that turn sunlight into electricity, sold for $775 million, which triple the 2006 sales. That helped the company's stock price to grow 251 percent in 2007, which place it as the fastest growing stock in the Silicon Valley (the company is based in San Jose, CA), way beyond Apple or Google.

As the gaz prices is rocketing and concerns about global warming and environment is on the rise, solar power is becoming more than ever an attractive source of energy. Let's  not forget also that on top of lower your electricity bills, the government will offer you a residential energy credit between 10 and 30% for the installation of solar panels!

However, even though the market is expanding, solar energy represent only 0.1% of the 3 trillion dollars of the global energy market... Nevertheless, there are good reasons to expect a large developments over the next few years:

  1. The global awareness about environmental issues
  2. The effort is driven by private companies and investors, which find economical incentives to invest and make business in this industry
  3. The will of states and the government to push both companies and customers to adopt these technologies.

Loyalty for dogs vs customers : the Surcouf commercial

I have decided lately to share with my French audience some of the innovative and interesting commercials and ideas I see in the US. And as I was visiting Mickael Guillois' blog (in French), one of my favorite blog, I found this article about the Surcouf's ad for their loyalty card.

I like very much Mickael's blog, because he always has very interesting point of views and information about customer relationship management strategies and trends.

Anyway, here is my comment about the ad. But first of all, the background, as people might not know about the context.

Surcouf
Surcouf is a hi fi equipment retailer in France. Owned by PPR, one of the largest retailing holding company in the world, which by the way own the Fnac where I worked earlier in my career, Surcouf is a discount retail, located mainly in the Parisian area.

They have launched recently their loyalty card (which is weird for a discount company by the way), and have a communication campaign in France. Here is the ad below.

Description
As you can see, you have a dog in the middle of the board. The text on the right : "We are always rewarded for loyalty".
Indeed, the dog then represent the loyal customer, waiting for its cookies.

And that is the point of Mickael: Is it really a good ad, as the customer is compared to a dog. In his opinion, this ad means:
1 If the program won't thrill me it will at least turn me captive as this dog
2 That loyalty toward a brand is now a submission act totally unproductive: did this dog really earn something by becoming a pet?
3 That loyalty is a question of politeness: " Thank you who? Thank you doggie!".

My opinion
In my opinion, there is a double way to see this ad. The first one, it is creative, it matches the brand image of Surcouf, always innovating on its market. The comnmercial is funny, that is for sure.

But on the other side, customers are compared to dogs. And that is the downside. Does it mean that Surcouf considers its customers as pets? I don't know. But what is sure, it is that this concept can be taken in both senses.

And you, what do you think about it?

Microsoft bid $45 billion for Yahoo!

A lot of things have already been said for the news of the day: Microfost is aiming to takeover Yahoo! I just wanted to analyze what is going on and give you my opinion about it.

Yesterday already, as Yahoo's share price was going down had decided to lay off 1 600 employees. We don't have to forget however that Yahoo! is still a profitable company, able to have strong merging on an increasing market. However, one of the problem that Yahoo! has is that the market share price was too high compared to the actual value of the company. The market share is based upon expected revenues in the future, but the fact is that we are on the edge of a stabilization of the market, with a slower pace of grow. That means that investor have noticed that Yahoo is closed to its maximum grow.

You can also see that as Google's market shares are also going down. The market is still profitable, as the companies are on a fast growing market of the online advertising. However, this is the time for these highly speculative shares to get down.

But also, what we can see is that this market of search engine is dominated by Google, that hold 90% of the market. Therefore, in every market which is dominated by a company, the competitors merge and restructure themselves in order to build a company able to compete. That is why Microsoft is willing to get Yahoo.

Microsoft buys because he can't do any other way
According to Philippe Colombel of Partch International, an investment company specialized in VCs and start-ups, Microsoft had to buy Yahoo. Microsoft was not competitive and it could not let Google take the monopoly of the market so easily, as online market is one of the main strategic market Microsoft wanted to develop on.

Another main reason is Yahoo! technology Sometimes, companies by others because they can't create or develop what they don't have. For example, the giant France Telecom bought Orange, a small British telecom company, because of its new management skills and its strong brand.
That is the same thing I think with Yahoo. I think that Yahoo has a way better technology than Microsoft. And because of it, Microsoft would like to incorporate its search engine skills to its Live environment.

The consequences
There are two main options. The first one is to kill Yahoo! and take the Yahoo technology to merge it into the Microsoft live product. That is already what happened sort of with hotmail, which is now totally incorporated in the Microsoft world.

But the fact is that Yahoo! owns still a strong brand and a legitimity on this market. The second option would be to keep yahoo, and to have both in the market. Sort of what has Procter and Gamble with Pumpers and Luv on the diapers market. That will allow the company to have two products, and then generate more tractions.

What is for sure, it is that a lot of people on both sides might lose their jobs...

And you, what do you think about it?

Plaxo virtualizes Outlook

It has been couple of weeks now that I have received an invitation to Plaxo. Right away I felt very interested by the service, which allow you to manage your contacts, calendars and tasks by synchronizing different sources. For example, I personally use Outlook and Google calendars, I have contacts on LinkedIn. Plaxo is sort of a super Outlook that will help you organize all the sources.

Another main strength of the concept is that you can have access to your information wherever you have access to Internet. That is a virtual version of Outlook. Actually that is also a reason why I was not using Outlook for a long time and reluctant to use it, because I am always on the go, and thanks to this service, you can have access to all of your different data on any computer.

I must admit that the first time I used Plaxo I had problems to synchronize my outlook with this service, but I did it now, and this is impressive. It also have some great add-ons for Outlook, making for example the presentation of your contact information more lisible.

I also like the homepage, where you can see the last posts of your friends on twitter, or the new contact information updates of your contact. That allow you to save time, as it is updated automatically.

However, there is still some room for improvement. Indeed, I tried to add a task directly on Plaxo but I could not add a category on it. That means the service is not totally complete yet, but Plaxo has for sure some very good sides!

I invite you to have a look to this very good service.

Interface Marketing Chez Danone Eaux France

Blogged with Flock

Starbucks has expended too much the Starbucks experience

Howard Schultz, the Starbucks' chairman and founder, will return as CEO of the company. Indeed, a lot of things was going wrong in his company. Especially Starbucks was developing new product ranges at a fast pace, which was not relevant to the famous "starbucks experience", based on drinking coffee.

Indeed, my girlfriend is working at Starbucks, and you can see that some of the products they were selling was far from the core values of Starbucks. Starbucks were selling for example games and books, which did have nothing related to coffee.

The worst example is of course Starbucks partnership with Itunes, allowing the Apple users (with their Iphone or Ipod) to have access to Itunes inside the Starbucks store to purchase music.

Hopefully Starbucks will be able to refocus soon.

Eight business technology trends to watch

I found this article via the visionmarketing blog. McKinsey, the famouns consulting company, that by the way invented the McKinsey matrix which is used to analyze the performance of holdings on multiple market, has raised 8 main trends for the future. You can see the original article by clicking and registering here (for free).

The 8 trends are:
1. Distributing cocreation
2. Using consumers as innovators
3. Tapping into a world of talent
4. Extracting more value from interactions
5. Expanding the frontiers of automation
6. Unbundling production from delivery
7. Putting more science into management
8. Making businesses from information
As you can see, no major surprise in these trends that are already on the way since a year or two. But the article is worthwhile as it explains how these trends will impact businesses, and of course how it will give competitive advantages to companies using them.
